Was it not for the Textile companies in the county of Vorarlberg, the industrial revolution engulfing the region in the late 19th century would not have had its impact on economy, and the county's population as it did.

When we speak of Textiles, invariably the name Getzner pops up. It was thanks to the pioneers of the Textile industry, that textiles manufactured in Bludenz became so popular.

Some historical data :

Christian Getzner

Christian Getzner was born on 12 October 1782 in Satteins, died on August 8, 1848 in Feldkirch. His parents owned a small farm in Satteins ( small village in Vorarlberg ).

In this small village he attended elementary school. Christan had six siblings. In 1800 he joined commercial business of Johann Joseph Ganahl in Feldkirch as a trading assistant.

In 1806 he married Maria Barbara Catherine Barbisch from Bludenz. His first venture was a spice shop in the family home of his wife. In the same shop he started also trading with cotton or cotton spun yarns for operation, much like his former employer Ganahl in Feldkirch.

In 1815 he took his wife's cousin, Andreas Gassner, as an accountant. Two years later he took over the leadership of the business. Together with Andreas Gassner and Franz Xaver's mother, they founded Getzner, Mutter & Cie.

Christan Getzner relocated to Feldkirch in the Palais Liechtenstein, where he instituted in 1819 a spinning machine, and the first red dyeing factory in Vorarlberg.

In Bludenz he operated with Johann Joseph Ganahl 1820-1832 spinning Brunnental. Christian Getzner expanded its operations by building the spinning and weaving mill in Burs and Nenzing, dyeing, bleaching, finishing in Feldkirch-Felsenaustrasse.

The sales offices established in Vienna, Linz and Verona go back to the early days.

Christian Getzner died childless. His heir were his nephews Josef Getzner and Andreas Tschavoll, which he had trained in his lifetime already for their upcoming tasks.

Further development in Textiles and related industries

Generations of people that followed were employed in the works that Christian Getzner had established. The brand of Getzner carried on through generations in an otherwise relatively unknown economic area, normally known for its mountainous and picturesque beauty.

Its roots grew over the century, its strength continuous to this day.
